The past is never dead. It’s not even past. All of us labour in webs spun long before we were born, webs of heredity and environment, of desire and consequence, of history and eternity.” William Faulkner - Requiem for a Nun.

MARCH 13th, Our first away trip of the year. 2025 marks the 200th Anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, which development triggered the start of the modern towns of the Hartlepools. We visited the new Hopetown site at North Rd Darlington, in keeping with the occasion we travelled by train from town via Thornaby to the North Rd Station in Darlington travelling via both the Clarence and S&DR rail routes. A well worth trip to the multi-million pound development of North Road Station which includes updated Car Parking and access to the Skerne Bridge (featured on a recent issue of a blue fiver!), Allison our guide gave us a tour of the facilities and the history of the S & D.

OCTOBER 9th Elizabeth of Glamis – the Early Life of the Queen Mother
The images we remember most of the late Queen Mother are of the smiling ‘Nation’s Grandmother’ wearing a large feathery pastel-coloured hat and matching coat, and also the black-and-white photographs and newsreels of her visiting newly bombed streets in the East End of London during the War. Less familiar are the images and story of the young Elizabeth, the mischievous little girl and very attractive debutante who went on to marry the man who became King. This is that story.
NOVEMBER 13TH A Lecture by the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway giving the background to the founding of the S & D Railway in 1825 and the effect it had on our region.
